Rihanna Kicks Off 'Last Girl on Earth' Tour in Vancouver

Pop superstar Rihanna kicked off her 'Last Girl on Earth' tour along with assistance from pop phenom Ke$ha and up-and-coming artist Travie McCoy. The 22-year-old put a spectacular show and has impressed and wowed critics and fans alike. Checkout what the Vancouver Sun had to say below:

"VANCOUVER - Ke$ha might have dropped a dollar sign into her given name, but Sunday night it was headliner Rihanna who was — as Vince Vaughn's character in Swingers might say — so money.

Still, pop upstart Ke$ha's probably making buckets of it, given the success of Tik Tok, the first single off her debut album, Animal, released earlier this year.

Emerging onstage from the middle of a collection of vertical LED banks and strapped with a guitar modified to resemble a machine gun — which she "played" for a couple of minutes — it seems that Ke$sha is trying to send us a message: she is a naughty, naughty girl.

But don't let Ke$ha's Clockwork Orange-inspired eye makeup fool you: there's nothing deviant about her vapid party girl lyrics, though she clearly has a knack for writing infectiously catchy tunes, the kind designed to get lodged in the back of your brain for obnoxious stretches of time.

Take her delightful ditty Dinosaur: "Old man why are you staring at me/Mac on me and my friends, it's kind of creepy/You should be prowling around the old folks' home/Come on dude, leave us alone..."

Not exactly Joni Mitchell. Then again, nobody endorses creepy old men save for creepy old men, so no harm, no foul. And the young girls in the crowd enthusiastically shouting the chorus, "D-I-N-O-S-A, you are a Dinosaur!" made it clear that Kei$ha's lyrics are right on the money.

Unfortunately, her penchant for auto-tune and heavy reliance on tracking vocals made it difficult to tell whether she can actually sing. A betting man might say she's just another overproduced studio singer whose 15 minutes will Tik Tok away tout suite. Time will tell. And if that's the case, hopefully Kei$a's smart enough to save as many dollar signs as she can before the clock runs out.

Rihanna, who took the stage almost 30 unfashionable minutes late, floated out from the back of the stage in a long black dress covered in red LED lights that looked like it might have taken roughly that amount of time to get into. It was quickly stripped off though to reveal a racy number underneath for Hard, while a sextet of dancers writhed on top of a pink tank and Rihanna straddled its long barrel.

And with a bang, we were off...

The excellent six-piece band ramped up the decibels for Shut Up and Drive and never really took their foot off the gas for the rest of the night — somewhat surprisingly, this was probably one of the loudest shows of the year.

The stage design was a slick combination of moving platforms and elaborate props, while the performance included great vocals accompanied by plenty of frenetic visuals: dancers suspended from machine guns, a couple of stilt-walking creatures who looked like they might have escaped from Burning Man, more video edits than Apocalypse Now and more costume changes than a Lady Gaga show.

It was a high-paced, highly polished 90 minutes with few kinks — impressive given that it's the first show of Rihanna's summer tour. And she seemed genuinely excited to be here, telling the excitable crowd near the end of the show: "It's the first show of my North American Canadian tour!"

Hey, no one's perfect."

  2. Rih really has shown such improvement vocally lately. I am very impressed - honest to God! I would happily go to a concert of hers now. I was very entertained just watching these clips. Really think the break was a great thing for her, because her voice has had time to rest - it was sounding a bit scratchy before it. All in all, a great show.
